Roatan lies about 65 km off the north coast of Honduras, the largest of the Bay Islands, and its reef is part of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. Fees, Day Passes and the Reef

There is no gate and no island ticket, so the fare is the price of the tour. What a fare may leave out is a sanctuary entry, a beach chair or a West Bay resort day pass. The Roatan Marine Park also asks a voluntary US$10 reef fee, paid at its EcoStore in West End, which no tour requires.

Where the Tours Go

The snorkel boats work the reef off West End and the south side, around French Cay and the Blue Channel. The sanctuary days stop with the sloths and monkeys, then the chocolate factory, the rum company and a beach. The ziplines and ATV trails run through the forested hills in between.

There is no gate and no island ticket, so you pay for the tour itself. Fares run from $45 to $185 a person, and the sanctuary and beach days from $55 to $75. The reef, the sanctuaries and a beach, an ATV or a driver of your own: the first chip on each card says which.

Know your port

Guides wait outside gate 1 at the Port of Roatan, or up the hill past the security gate at Mahogany Bay.

Run on ship time

Pickups are set by your ship's clock, usually one hour after docking, and island time can differ.

How much does a Roatan Honduras tour cost?

The fares here run from $45 to $185 a person. Most sanctuary and beach days cost $55 to $75, the ATV days $119 to $163, and two scuba dives $185. Check what each fare leaves out before you compare prices.

Is there a ticket to visit Roatan Honduras?

No. The island has no gate and no ticket office, so you pay for the tour itself. The fare says which entries it covers, such as a sanctuary, a beach day pass or the tastings.

Is West Bay Beach free?

The beach itself is public. What the tours sell is a resort day pass with a chair, a shower and a restroom, which some fares include and some leave to you.

Can I cancel for free?

Every tour listed here refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours ahead. Inside 24 hours there is no refund, so check your ship's schedule first.

Do I need to book before my cruise?

Booking ahead fixes your pickup at the port and your seat on the small-group days. Most operators message you before the ship arrives to confirm where to meet.

Which cruise port will I arrive at in Roatan Honduras?

Roatan has two: the Port of Roatan in Coxen Hole, used by Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC and others, and Mahogany Bay, now Isla Tropicale, in Dixon Cove, used by Carnival and its sister lines. They are about 5 km apart.

Where do I meet an independent tour at Mahogany Bay?

Outside the port. You walk through the shops, out of the covered gangway, left and up the hill past the security gate, or take a US$2 taxi. Guides wait at the top with signs.

When will my guide meet me?

Usually one hour after the ship docks. Some operators meet you 20 or 30 minutes after arrival, and one ATV day 90 minutes after.

Is ship time the same as island time?

Not always. Several operators warn that the two can differ and run their pickups on ship time. Check which clock your confirmation uses.

Roatan sits on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. The boats reach walls, channels and shallow reef within minutes of the shore.

Are Roatan Honduras tours good for children?

Most take children with an adult, and each listing sets its own age bands. The ATV driving age and the zipline minimum are the real limits, so check them before you book.

When is hurricane season?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, busiest from mid-August to mid-October, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Book a tour you can cancel and watch the forecast in those months.
